 About the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship

The Mandela Rhodes Foundation is looking for visionary leaders who not only possess excellent academic records but also believe their education should be used to make a difference for others.

The program requires a deep commitment to self-development, an openness to learning from diversity, and a willingness to embrace complexity. As a scholar, you will be required to participate in mandatory residential workshops and regional "pods" (small group gatherings) designed to foster personal growth and leadership skills.

 Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Age: You must be between the ages of 19 and 29 at the time of application.
  2. Citizenship: You must be a citizen of any African country.
  3. Academic Excellence: You must hold a first degree with above-average academic results (typically a minimum of 70% average or an Upper Second-Class Honours).
  4. Leadership Impact: You must have demonstrated leadership capabilities and made a tangible impact on your campus or in your community.
  5. Commitment: You must be willing to commit your time to the Foundation's leadership development program, including mandatory workshops.

 Scholarship Benefits and Duration

The scholarship will fund your degree for a maximum of two years, with no exceptions.

  • Honours students receive one year of funding.
  • Master’s students receive one or two years of funding, depending on the length of their specific program.

The financial coverage includes:

  • Full payment of tuition and registration fees.
  • A study materials allowance.
  • Accommodation and meal allowances.
  • A medical aid allowance.
  • A personal living allowance.
  • Economy-class flights for international scholars (from their home country to their South African institution at the start and end of their studies).
  • Research and conferencing grants (available upon request).

 Required Documents

When applying, you must have the following documents ready to upload:

  1. Academic Records: Certificates of completion for your previous degrees and official transcripts of your academic results.
  2. Identification: Scanned copies of your national ID card or valid passport.
  3. Two Essays: You will be required to write two short essays—one detailing your personal journey, and another answering a specific question related to the Foundation’s core principles.
  4. Recommendation Letters: You must provide two recommendation letters. Important: Your recommenders must submit their letters directly through the online application portal. You cannot submit your application until these letters are received.
  5. SAQA Certificate: If you are a non-South African applicant, you must have your foreign degree evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) to prove its equivalence. Note: This process can take 4 to 8 weeks, so start early.
  6. University Application Proof: You will need to detail your proposed course of study. You must check the specific admission requirements for your chosen course on the website of the South African university you wish to attend.

 How to Apply (Step-by-Step Process)

Applying requires simultaneous action on two fronts: applying to a university and applying to the Foundation. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Apply to a South African University You must independently apply for admission to a postgraduate program at a recognized South African university. If you are not accepted into a university, you cannot accept the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship, even if you are selected by the Foundation.

Step 2: Begin Your SAQA Evaluation (International Students Only) Immediately apply to SAQA to have your undergraduate degree evaluated. Do not wait for the scholarship deadline, as this takes weeks.

Step 3: Contact Your Recommenders Inform your two recommenders early so they have time to write and submit their letters through the Mandela Rhodes portal before the deadline.

Step 4: Access the Application Portal Visit the Mandela Rhodes Foundation application page and create an account.

Step 5: Complete the Application Form Fill in your personal details, academic history, and your proposed course of study in South Africa.

Step 6: Upload Documents and Essays Upload your ID/passport, transcripts, SAQA certificate (if available), and your two required essays.

Step 7: Submit Early Do not wait until the last minute. Submit your application as soon as all your documents and recommendation letters are securely uploaded to the portal.
